Rotherham United might have to get the carpenters in to lengthen the benches in the dugouts before the start of the new season!
Why?
Because the Championship teams have agreed to have nine players on the bench, although there will still only be five substitutions allowed in a game.
Last season it was five changes from seven on the bench and, there were times, when, due to injuries, the Millers weren’t able to fill that five – let’s hope we can always fill the seven we can now have.
Of course, this has got to be better for any manager being able to change like-for-like if needed or have the chance to completely change the formation if things aren’t going as expected.
Obviously, I was joking about the carpenters as I realise the seats in the dugouts are plastic now – but it’s not that long ago, when we were only allowed one sub, that the benches were actually wooden. But that was a whole different game.
I’m just thinking that when we’ve said in the past ‘oh we’re only getting him in to sit on the bench’ this could actually be true this year.
