Woody Signs On For Another Year

Rotherham United captain Richard Wood has signed a new deal with the Millers which keeps him at the New York Stadium until the summer of 2021.

Born in Ossett defender Woody started his playing career at Hillsborough playing around one hundred and seventy-five times for Sheffield Wednesday. He moved to Coventry City in 2010 leaving after three years to join Charlton Athletic.

The now thirty-four year old joined the Millers in the summer of 2014 his first game being in the Capital One Cup at the New York Stadium against Fleetwood which was a one-nil win in extra time. He had just four more appearances before January saw him out on loan with Crawley Town and was recalled in April playing three more times.

The following season he spent time with Fleetwood and Chesterfield coming back to Rotherham in January. In just his second game back he was sent off for two yellows but went on to play in eleven more Championship games.

Woody’s first Rotherham goal came on Bonfire Night 2016 at home to Preston North End his second coming a couple of weeks later against Leeds United.

The rest, as they say, is history. Richard was given the captains armband and helped the Millers, along with his magic hat, back into the Championship with two goals at Wembley in the 2018 League One Play-Off Final. It’s been a bit of a hit-and miss season for the skipper this season with injury having him kicking his heels a little but he’s still made twenty-two appearances and we’ve heard the ‘Richard Wood is magic’ song four times so far, the last time when he scored the only goal in our win over Ipswich last month.
