Rotherham United skipper Richard Wood told the Official Site that he was ‘buzzing’ after scoring the opening goal in the Millers two-one home win against Preston North End at the weekend.

Woody’s goal came on the fifty-third minute after a Dan Barlaser free-kick found the head of Michael Ihiekwe who found his skipper in the box and after getting it down he fired into the net. And then, it appeared he didn’t really know what to do until the rest of the team jumped on him in celebration.

Used to getting goals with his head, the six feet three inches defender said, ‘It was an instinctive hit, I don’t get many of them so I’m buzzing with it. It’s strange when you do score, it’s really quiet and you don’t know if there’s a problem or something.’

That, I think was the only thing wrong with the goal, the fans not being there to celebrate with him.

The thirty-five year old has been involved in six games so far this season, sometimes starting, sometimes having been dropped to the bench and coming on but there is one thing you know when Richard Wood is out on that pitch he is going to give you his best. He puts his whole body in where it hurts, he encourages the others in the team and I can only imagine how much his muscles protest when he comes off the pitch and into the dressing room.

How much longer can he go on us, the fans, sometimes wonder. Let’s hope it’s for as long as we need him.

Up The Millers.
