Where Will We Be At The End Of The Month

Rotherham United started February in top place in League One and, two games in, are still there as we sit and watch the teams around us play their mid-week games, the Millers having been scheduled to play at Bury who, of course, are no longer in the league.

So far this month the Millers have got six points from six scoring four goals, letting in two. We’ve four games left before March, two at home, two away, three of those games being against teams who are, as we stand today, in the bottom six of the division.

Looking on paper at the end of the month it would be disappointing to still not be at the top of League One but, as a well known former player/pundit once said, ‘football is a funny old game’.

Three points below us in second place are Wycombe Wanderers who also have four games to play this month of which two are against clubs in the bottom three at the moment. In third place we have Peterborough, who beat us in January, who, in their three games left have to play Southend who, at present, are second from bottom. Coventry are fourth with four games left in February one of those also being Southend – with their last game of the month, of course, being against Rotherham. Portsmouth are just a point behind Mark Robins’ side and are catching up with five League games and plus the Trophy semi-final game – might having all those games mean their players could become jaded and drop off a little? Could do, then again, might not do either. Sunderland, the last of the top six as it stands today, have three home games out of four to play and just out of the top six are Ipswich Town and Doncaster Rovers.

Quite a few of the teams below Rotherham have games in hand and the end of February could see the table change in quite a big way with Oxford, who are in tenth place at present, having a chance to get into the top six. Of course, they’ve all got to win those games in hand – personally, I’d rather have the points on the board at this stage of the season.

A lot of people say it’s ‘after Christmas’ that you can make a good guess at where your team will be. I think it’s the end of February.

I was asked recently if I thought Rotherham United were ‘punching above their weight’ being top of League One. I said, ‘no’. It’s there for all to see. You win your games you take the points – whether you win handsomely or you do it scruffily.

In 2020 we’ve lost just one game – long may that continue – our four games left this month are . . .

15th – Millers v AFC Wimbledon
22nd – Accrington Stanley v Millers
25th – Coventry City v Millers
29th – Millers v MK Dons

How many points do you think we’ll get from them?

10 would be not only great form but if those points include a draw against Coventry, or win then it will be nothing short of what we need to go up. At this stage nothing but top 2 firm will do.

In that vein I expect no losses this month. Several wins, which I think we are capable of will see us several points clear by mid march.

I hope you are right, Ian. I would definitely hope for nine (three wins) and, as you say, anything against Coventry would be a bonus. But, as we know, football doesn’t always do what we expect!
