What’s Been Happening With Last Season’s Loanees?

Rotherham United didn’t have many loanees last season – but what has happened to them since they left the New York Stadium.

Defender Rarmani Edmonds-Green joined at the beginning of August making his debut in the Carabao Cup a few days later. Reg played the whole ninety minutes in the two-one loss to Accrington. The following week he made his league debut away at Morecambe being subbed after the first half. All in all he made thirty-eight appearances in a Rotherham shirt scoring three league goals, the last one in our last game of the season away at Gillingham that saw the Millers promoted.

Since then we’ve heard very little about Reg. I think a lot of us were hoping he would be back for the coming season, whether again on loan from Huddersfield Town, or on a permanent deal. We know that he signed a new deal at the John Smith’s Stadium in January keeping him there until 2024, with the option of another year. Maybe the Terriers don’t want to loan him out to a team in the same league as they play – which I fully understand. And I would have thought if they were going to loan him out then he might have gone now teams are back in training, so it could be that Huddersfield want to play him themselves this coming season.

We waited until late on transfer deadline day to be told that Will Grigg has signed for the season from Sunderland. Grigg went on to make twenty-nine appearances last season for the Millers scoring his first goal in the Papa John’s Trophy game on his debut away at Doncaster Rovers. He made his debut, coming off the bench, at the New York Stadium in our four-two loss to Fleetwood Town in September, his first league goal coming later that month in our three-nil home win over AFC Wimbledon. February saw Will get an hamstring injury against the team he scored his first league goal against at Plough Lane and he didn’t play again, although, he was there at Wembley joining in the celebrations.

Again, I think a lot of us thought Will would be already back at the New York Stadium but, as we’ve found out this week that he’s been training with MK Dons perhaps we won’t be seeing him next season.  Then again he might just be keeping his fitness levels up?

Arsenal U21 wing-back Jordi Osei-Tutu arrived in Rotherham on the final day of the January transfer window making his debut in our two-nil away win at Hillsborough, when he came off the bench with ten minutes to go. He went on to play another fifteen games for the Millers his only goal coming at Wembley in the Papa John’s Trophy Final at the beginning of April. His goal deep into stoppage time, which was whipped into the net past the ‘keeper and two defenders, set the tie to extra time which saw Rotherham beat Sutton four-two.

Earlier this month Jordi made a permanent move to Bundesliga side VfL Bochum, where he spent the 2019/20 season on loan. All at Vital Rotherham wish Jordi ‘good luck’ for his future.

So, do you think we will see either or both Edmonds-Green and Grigg back in Rotherham shirts this coming season? Time, as they say, will tell.
