What Do The Stats Say – Millers v Middlesbrough

|

Rotherham United got their second away win in a row this evening when they beat Middlesbrough three-nil at the Riverside – their first win on Middlesbrough soil for almost sixty-five years.

For weeks we, the fans, have been asking for the Millers to take their chances and tonight we had eleven shots at goal of which six were on target while our hosts had just one shot on target from fourteen tries. Despite that the stats tell us that ‘Boro had sixty-one per cent of possession – really?

I have to admit that Middlesbrough weren’t the tallest of sides with Rotherham winning seventy-two per cent of the aerial duels this evening but had just three corners to ‘Boro’s seven. Passing in our opponents half came out at fifty-two per cent with the opposition getting sixty-one per cent. Fouls conceded were around equal at thirteen-fourteen and Referee Michael Salisbury didn’t have to go to his pocket with no cards being shown.

This was one of games in hand after it was called off on Boxing Day because of their being Covid-19 in the Millers camp and while we’ve been looking at the table knowing we had three games in hand of some of the teams around us we knew we’d probably got to win them – and that we did and made a good job of it as well but while we want to celebrate this victory we’ve also got to be wary that we are still in the bottom three and need to get more points on the board.

And we’ve got to mention Ryan Giles. His twenty-first birthday, yesterday, was spent signing on loan for Rotherham, he came on for the last couple of minutes of the game for his debut and scored – you can’t really ask for more than that.
