Wembley Stats – Millers v Shrews

Rotherham United are back in the Championship after the two-one win over Shrewsbury Town at Wembley on Sunday.

Richard Wood had his magic hat on during and after the one hundred and twenty minutes of the game. His two goals were both excellent, the header down actually, in my eyes, a perfect headed goal from a defender, his second wasn’t too bad either!

But, with the temperatures rising to thirty degrees everyone on that pitch played their part, from both sets of players to the officials.

The penalty miss might have led to David Ball and his colleagues dropping their heads but it didn’t. They put it behind them and got on with the game, credit, especially to Ball for that.

Extra time was the teller, I think. It wasn’t getting any cooler (I’m not sure how the Shrews fans were able to stay in the sunshine all that time, good on ’em) and it was then that the fitness of the teams, in my eyes, showed. Not one Miller went down with cramp, which shows where the fitness was. Wood, Ryan Williams and Will Vaulks all had taken bumps and knocks and all carried on.

I don’t think anyone would say the better team, on the day, didn’t win. Although the Shrews had more possession the Millers won more in the air, intercepted more and had more corners.

So, how will we do next season? Really we can’t judge yet so we will just have to wait and see.
