Warne ‘We Need To Get A Little Better’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne was pleased to get through to round two of the Carabao Cup after their win at Port Vale last night.

‘It wasn’t a classic,’ the Millers Boss told Radio Sheffield after the two-one win, ‘but we got through and got some minutes into people.

‘There were parts of our game I really liked, parts I wasn’t so keen on but we got through and as a cup game that’s what it’s all about. There were a load of Championship teams who lost to lower opposition, they are really tricky games.

‘I said to the lads after the game if we give the ball away loosely like we did a few times at the end of the game, if that’s against a Watford then we are in deep trouble.

‘I thought Port Vale were really good and caused us problems. But we should probably have got a third goal which isn’t taking anything away from them. Yes, we do need to get a little bit better.’

I think we have to remember that this was a cup game which, let’s be honest, the Millers are renown for doing well in, this was just our second game of the season with players who hadn’t necessarily played together before. And then there was the heat. It was never going to be a classic.

Going on to say he thought some of the players did well, Warney said, ‘I thought Scotty High was excellent, Ollie Rathbone’s energy in the middle of the park was excellent and I think Pelts (Lee Peltier), who I took off because he hadn’t had any pre-season minutes, is a brilliant addition to the club.

‘We were forced into early subs when Chieo (Ogbene) had to come on for Wash (Conor Washington) who got a dead leg and Peter Kioso tweaked his groin. That’s a bit of a blow as he will be out for a period of time.’

Saying he still wants new faces in, Warne said that he ‘thinks’ he is ‘nearly there’ with a striker saying, ‘I can’t see him not joining us. I’d like to think we can get him in by the weekend.

‘I also think we need something else in the middle of the park and that might go to the last day of the window or not at all. I’m ever hopeful.’

He also said that the club weren’t encouraging bids for Dan Barlaser as the Chairman and club don’t want to sell and the player himself doesn’t want to leave.
