Warne ‘We Missed Many Chances’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne told Radio Sheffield that he thought his Millers team created enough chances to get more than the five goals against Gillingham this evening.

Speaking after the five-one win the Millers’ Boss said, ‘I don’t think Viktor (Johansson) had a save to make and I thought we were pretty dominant.’

And I think he’s right in the second half though I did think we rode our luck a little in the first half without looking like we might concede another. Some of our build-up play, in my opinion, was slow and we didn’t appear to close the opposition down.

‘I thought Gillingham started the game a bit more aggressive and we went behind early on and after they scored we lost a bit of composure, got frustrated. I thought they put up a decent fight but when we did move the ball quickly we were difficult to stop. The conditions were difficult, we missed a penalty but we missed many a good chance as well. But I’m not complaining and with five-one I’m really pleased.’

When the Millers were four-one up the fans, particularly behind the goal, were urging our players to shoot from any angle they found themselves in around the box with Warney saying, ‘I’ve told the lads that when the crowd tell them to shoot it doesn’t mean they should, it’s not compulsory! For instance when JJ (Kayode) was on the edge of the box and was being urged to shoot he’s clever enough to realise that Dan (Barlaser) was in a better position.’

It’s because we are desperate for JJ to get a goal! It will come for JJ, I’m sure it will and he is such a selfless player – a team player.
