Warne ‘There Wasn’t A Bad Performance Today’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne was ‘really pleased’ with his side’s four-one home win over Portsmouth this afternoon.

Speaking to Radio Sheffield the Millers Boss said it was pleasing to score four good goals against a Portsmouth side who he thought were a really good team who caused his Rotherham team some problems.

‘I wasn’t best pleased the first ten minutes,’ Warne said, ‘and maybe the score line flattered us at half-time. But after us needlessly giving the ball away for them to score it was a really good reaction from the lads.’

The team did react well to conceding the equalising goal but I think, in part, that was due to fetching on Chieo Ogbene. Once Chieo and our players started to run at Portsmouth I don’t think they knew how to deal with us.

Going on to speak about double goal scorer Michael Smith, his manager said, ‘Smudge just leads the line really well. He’s been colossus for us and works hard in the gym and the training ground and is now getting his just rewards. He was excellent today and he will be the one to take the headlines but I thought the midfield three today were really good. Mickel (Miller) had an amazing performance. There wasn’t a bad performance today.’

I think Warney is right, there was no bad performance today, especially in the second half. I thought we started the game slowly and even after we’d scored I thought we were just the second team. But once Chieo came on we took over the pitch and played how we know we can.

The only downside to today’s win seems to be an injury to Michael Ihiekwe who had to be replaced ten minutes into the second half with what appeared to be a groin injury.  There is also worry over Goalkeeper Viktor Johansson who is suffering with a back problem.
