Warne ‘Should Have Taken More Of Our Chances’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne saw his team win a penalty shoot-out this evening to go through to the next round of the Papa John’s Trophy which also saw the Millers go seventeen games unbeaten this season.

The game ended one-all after ninety minutes with Port Vale at the New York Stadium with the Millers going on to win five-three on penalties.

Speaking after the game the Millers Boss told the Official Site that he thought his side should have been comfortably in front going in at half-time.

‘The balls we were putting in merited a comfortable lead,’ Warne said, ‘but we didn’t take the chances. Then we got an amazing goal and I was well happy. But Port Vale kept asking questions and caused us no end of problems. Viktor (Johansson) kept us in it and, in all fairness, the goal they got came from a little bit of luck but they put it away and their play deserved a goal. But we should have took more of our chances.

‘It went to penalties and I didn’t think I’d be as nervous as I was. All in all I’m pretty pleased and the only injury we’ve come away with is Griggy (Will Grigg) who never really got over the crack he took early on.

‘But it was good to get minutes into players like Hacks (Hakeen Odoffin), Joe Mattock, T ( Tolaji Bola) and JJ (Joshua Kayode).’

I know a lot of us, me included, have a bit of a moan about this competition but it does get minutes into fringe players and/or players coming back from injury – although, of course, it can have the opposite affect and get players injured. It can also get you a Wembley appearance – and we haven’t had one of those for a couple of years have we . . .
