Warne ‘Pleased With Performance’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne was happier with his sides performance last night in their one-all draw with Premier League side Newcastle United.

Speaking to IFollow after the pre-season friendly the Millers Boss said, ‘I thought we moved the ball well tonight and I was pleased with the performance where I think we reduced a lot of our errors. Match fitness isn’t an issue I just think it’s the sharpness and obviously, at times, we need to improve.

Saying that his side don’t lack energy or desire Warney did say that he feels they are lacking strength in depth and hopes to get more players in.

‘All in all,’ Warne said, ‘it was a reasonable night at the office and we haven’t got any new injuries.’

Asked about signings, he said, ‘If it wasn’t for Covid and all the protocols we have to go through then I think we’d already have another two in the building.’

Radio Sheffield asked if he thought last night’s scorer, and big Newcastle fan, Michael Smith will still be in a Rotherham shirt at the start of this coming season the Boss said, ‘I’m pretty hopeful. But, if the lads keep performing to that level then they are going to attract attention. From a managerial point of view I hope all my players stay and we are able to bring in more bodies to help them.’

Going on to speak about the injuries, he said that the physio’s are confident that Joe Mattock will join in training on Monday and could be available for the first game of the season.  So that’s some better news.

The Millers take on Middlesbrough on Friday night again at the New York Stadium and it will be another good work out for the lads before the real work starts the following week.
