Warne ‘It’s A Disappointing Evening’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne thought his sides play in the first half deserved a goal but their second half performance didn’t match the first.

Speaking after losing at home to Luton Town this evening the Millers Boss told iFOLLOW, ‘You have to score when you’re on top and we didn’t.’

No, we didn’t. And it isn’t the first time that’s happened this season – even last season – and I really think that is something that has to be addressed.

‘Luton were better than us in the second half,’ the Gaffer admitted, ‘and they deserved their goal. Disappointingly we didn’t really have a reaction after that which is probably my fault, I probably didn’t make enough changes. We had a fifteen minute spell that didn’t look like us tonight and that’s disappointing.’

Again there is no arguing with that. Once Luton scored, I won’t say our heads went down, but we looked physically shell-shocked. And you haven’t got ten minutes to try and catch you breath in the Championship. You’ve got to get straight back into the game.

Warney said he thought the two wingers were exhausted in the second half saying, ‘they’ve practically played every minute and we are pretty reliant on those two. Wiles was going to be our number ten tonight but with Joe (Mattock) going off that changed, though I thought he was outstanding.

‘When you are under the cosh, and we were for fifteen minutes, you have to see it out and tonight we weren’t good enough to do that.

‘It’s a disappointing evening.’

Talking about the injuries Warney said that Joe Mattock has a muscle injury and Shaun MacDonald has broken his leg and will be out for eight or ten weeks.

Hi, Caz. Turning into a bitterly disappointing season. I posted on another site several weeks ago that our forwards were L1 standard at best. I now feel it’s beyond question that Warne and Barker are the same. They cannot do it at this level. Warne’s tactical approach, his selections and his substitutions are poor imo. I am also tired of his repeated mantra about how well we played but didn’t score, didn’t see the game out etc, etc. I have said to you on several occasions in the last few seasons that Warne has this odd tendency to talk of problems as if he had no involvement in their solution. I would make a change during the international break but TS won’t.

No, I don’t expect to see a change, Kevin. We seem to put a lot of effort in but don’t get anywhere. I do think we are a better side than the last time we were in the Championship, we seem to have a bit more of the play. But when we go a goal behind we don’t seem to know what to do. I think a lot of it comes to not having a Plan B.

Caz, I always enjoy and value your contributions and you are also certainly better placed than I am to appreciate what’s going on. But my view is that it is Plan A that’s the problem; it’s fundamentally misconceived. Smith for example can never in my opinion play as the striker in 451. Ladapo might well be prolific in a dominant L1 or L2 side but he’s not the answer for us. What was the point of Hirst and what is the point of having Vassel on the books? We seem under Warne to have achieved that unenviable distinction of playing unattractive football which is also ineffective.

    • Caz Neale (Herringthorpe) says:

Apparently Vassel had the chance to leave but chose to stay with the Millers. It is a big worry that we can’t find the net – should we start him alongside another striker on Saturday perhaps? Baldtobe thinks we should have Hirst and Smith on from the start. You could be right about Freddie not being a Championship player but isn’t it our job to make him one? All I really know is that we should be winning our home games. That means scoring goals. And I don’t think we have a ten to twenty goal scorer in the squad, which, is possibly what we need.

    totally agree
warne is yet again showing his for want of a word lack of tactics.
he rarely makes the right sub and wont change a formation

  • dermot Fox says:

hi put vassal up front with two more rotate squad play barrister just behind the front three urgent vassel will run all day give him help dermot fox thank you good job well done three front men these changes need to be to morrow ps get a striker in

    • Caz Neale (Herringthorpe) says:

The problem I see is that Barlaser seems to have to be everywhere, Dermot and I don’t think he can do that for more than sixty minutes. I’d love to start with three strikers as I think that shows the other team you mean business.

  • Kevin Dobson says:

crooks is good e xample of a bad sub
