Warne ‘Fans Did Not Deserve To Watch That’

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne must have been as disappointed with today’s performance as the travelling one thousand six hundred were today at the Crown Oil Arena with his telling iFOLLOW that it was ‘an off day’.

And saying that he wasn’t wrong was he.

The Millers Boss made a few changes to the side fetching in Curtis Tilt for the injured Michael Ihiekwe and putting right-back Billy Jones at left-back for Joe Mattock who was also suffering with injury while Adam Thompson was recalled with Matt Olosunde missing out.

And, somehow, it didn’t look right.

I did think for the first twenty minutes or so we were the better side and had some of those missed chances gone in well, it could have been a different story couldn’t it. But they didn’t and it wasn’t.

Speaking after the three-one loss, the Gaffer said, ‘We had a good following here today and they did not deserve to watch that. A few of the lads had an off day which is the nicest way to put it. It summed up our day when Wilsey’s (Ben Wiles) header was going in but Smudge (Michael Smith) touched it and it’s an offside goal.

‘But we haven’t turned into a bad team overnight. We’ve been amazing away from home but it just wasn’t our day.’

Yes, there were too many players having an off day but, to be honest, I think that can be said of the last two or three games. We’ve looked jittery and never controlled the game at Accrington or last weekend at home to MK Dons but have ground out results. There was no grounding out today.

But, saying all that, we are still in second place, still in an automatic promotion place. All we can do now is make sure we don’t lose our next nine games – and to do that we’ve got to play with a confidence that I don’t think was there today.

I don’t think we’ve played well in more than a handful of games this season. Home performances have been poor. We can’t take chances and some of our forwards lack football intelligence. Smith’s no longer worth his place in the team and Vassel seems to have reverted back after a few stellar performances. We are where we are largely because it’s such a poor season in L1; usually our points total would put us several places lower. Today was unacceptable and I mean unacceptable. A decent promotion side would have taken 9 points from 3 games where we managed only 2. At the risk of being accused of overreaction I repeat what I have said twenty times this season: Warne’s limitations are obvious. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Caz has probably worked out that I’m not Warne’s biggest fan. I accept that I may be unfairly critical – but note I use the word “may”. I find his evasiveness profoundly annoying: it’s as if performances happen outside of his control; “a bad day”, “an off day”, “just not our day.” The winger situation is baffling. Lamy in then off to Wimbledon. A couple of wingers in in January but play Wiles out wide instead. Smith was never going to score while Ladapo might; Warne’s destroying the guy’s confidence. To me (and can’t be proven) Evans, Warnock, Moore or Robins with this squad would have 12 points more. It’s pathetic and just when we need to be strong the team and manager go melt down. I’m beyond annoyed.

spot on kev i think its all about team selection and playing player out of position. the defence need a kick up the backside when the went top i think to many players thouth the were world beaters. teams dont lay down when they play table toppers it makes them play better harder to beat as annoyed as you cil

I have to admit I was puzzled with the original team selection on Saturday – left-backs at right-back when there’s a right-back on the bench, midfielder at left-back when we have a left-back at right-back. And the winger situation, Kev is baffling me too. Our form hasn’t been the best CinL has it – I’m just hoping it’s our ‘blip’ time and we come back stronger for the rest of the campaign. I never actually thought we’d go up as champions (though I didn’t think it would be Marky Robins team who went above us, good on him) but I was hoping to go up in second place. I really don’t want to have to go down the play-off route if at all possible.

Automatic promotion on the performances of the last four games i dont think so

    • Caz Neale (Herringthorpe) says:

Nine games, nine cup finals, John and who knows what the teams around us might do.

  • carlton in lindrick says:

I reckon caz they will need 7 wins to stay in the top 2 or at least 5 wins to stay in the top 6 i think its time to cross everything

I think Saturday might have been part down to me – I saw ONE flippin’ magpie on the way to the game and couldn’t find it’s mate….

  • carlton in lindrick says:

caz go for a long walk before next game and try and find more than one magpie
