Warne Doesn’t Think Millers Created Enough

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne said that in the first half of the game against Reading this afternoon the Millers were the only team playing on the front foot.

Speaking to iFOLLOW after the three-nil defeat, the Millers Boss said, ‘We passed the ball really well without creating enough clear chances.’

The Millers had almost seventy per cent of possession in the first half of the game but just didn’t seem to be able to get the ball to a player who was in a good position to shoot. For me that is a worry. I really don’t think you can have that much possession away from home and not have shots at goal. Ben Wiles was probably playing out of position – I say probably as I’m now unclear as to what is his best or preferred position (I full expect him to play in goal in the near future) – which I don’t think helped him or those around him. Saying that we did have a very good first forty-five minutes. We also have players on the pitch who can score goals, so why we didn’t is a bit of a puzzle.

Warney also said it was a massive ‘sucker-punch’ for Reading to score in their first proper attack up field.

‘We came out in the second half and played quite well,’ the Gaffer said, ‘but again without creating. But I am pleased with the performance but you can see how hard it is to create clear cut chances and those half-chances need to go in when you are away from home.’

Eventually Rotherham went three up front but then Reading caught us with all our players up front and scored another two, the third from the penalty spot when either Richard Wood or Michael Ihiekwe (who got booked) or both tangled with the Reading player who went down.

The score line does flatter Reading but they held out and then did what good teams do and took their chances. For us fans it was a bit of a sickner.
