Two Weeks Since The Millers Season Ended

It has been two weeks since the football season ended for those of us not involved in the play-offs – this time last year we were getting ready for a trip to Wembley, but that was last year – and there has been more news coming out of the New York Stadium this week than there was last.

At the start of the week young defender Akeem Hinds signed a new one year deal with the Millers while the EFL confirmed that the summer transfer window deadline for League One and Two clubs would be Monday 2 September at 5pm, which is around three weeks longer than the Championship. (Ed note – not sure if this is actually a good thing or not?)

The club announced that Season Ticket sales for next season had passed the four and a half thousand mark which was followed by an announcement that two more pre-season friendly games had been added and the Millers would travel to the the Throstle Nest to take on Farsley Celtic and to the Proact Stadium to play Chesterfield.

While Rotherham told us their released list – Click Here – Semi Ajayi was called up to Nigeria’s provisional twenty-five-man squad for the Africa Cup of Nations which starts in June.

Goalkeeper Laurence Bilboe signed a new one-year deal and Chairman Tony Stewart told us he was looking forward to next season Click Here.

With the week coming to an end, Assistant Manager Richie Barker told us that the Millers were ‘close’ to making the first signing for the new season – but, of course, us Rotherham fans take all this with a pinch of salt and will believe it when we see him in a Rotherham shirt on the pitch. Paul Warne was waiting for the outcome of discussions with wide men Jon Taylor, Ryan Williams, Joe Newell and Anthony Forde of our out of contract players.

So will next week see a new player in? Will the wingers have all signed new deals? You just never know.

Going onto other football this week we’ve seen Manchester City win the FA Cup (and now our trouncing there doesn’t look too bad does it?!)  In my mind, and it is only me who might think this, the moment we drew City in the FA Cup we seem to lose a bit of our consistency.  Not that I’m saying it was that game that got us relegated but, I’m only putting it out there, that it might not have helped.

The play-off finals have now been sorted and we now know we will be playing either Newport County or Tranmere Rovers next season and either Charlton Athletic or Sunderland will be amongst our fixtures.  The Millers will have an interest in the second game with Ben Purrington, who is on loan from Rotherham at Charlton, should be in the starting line-up.  Who would you rather play of those four next season?  For me it doesn’t make a lot of difference who comes up from League One – though Tranmere is an easier journey – and I have nothing against Sunderland but I’d like Charlton to go up simply because, for one reason or another, I’ve never actually been to The Stadium of Light!

It’s all done tongue firmly in cheek caz! Have supported the millers first going to Millmoor with my dad way back in 1968, missed only 3 games while in exile at the Don Valley stadium and yeah am entitled to my moan.
