Another game of two halves – the Millers doing really well in the first forty-five minutes but Brentford making it look an easy win having the majority of the second half.

The visitors had the first chance of the game when they got a corner in the opening minutes which saw Mathias Jensen’s set-piece find Ethan Pinnock but Millers’ ‘keeper Jamal Blackman got down well to save. At the other end some nice work by Matt Crooks saw his ball into the box find Freddie Ladapo but the offside flag was up. Minutes later Michael Smith sent a low cross into the box only to see Pontus Jansson clear before Angus MacDonald’s super ball in was also cleared this time by Pinnock. On ten minutes a Bryan Mbeumo free-kick found the head of Pinnock who put it over the crossbar. The lively Jamie Lindsay did well to nick the ball off Jansson winning a free-kick which Joe Mattock took finding Lindsay who saw his shot take a deflection for a corner which is cleared. At the other end some great defending from MacDonald stopped a Rico Henry cross finding Ivan Toney. The first yellow of the night came on twenty-two minutes for Crooks who stopped Marcus Forss from getting into the box with the free-kick bouncing wide. More good work from Lindsay saw him find the head of MacDonald in the area but he put over before the visitors had a good chance when Mathias Jensen played the ball across the box finding Vitaly Janet who put his effort wide. Bees’ ‘keeper David Raya did well to stop a cross from Ben Wiles finding Ladapo and with five minutes to go to the end of the half Crooks went on a brilliant run and shot from an angle bringing off a save from Raya. At the other end MacDonald did well to stop a header from Forss causing problems after an intelligent cross from Toney found him.

No changes for the start of the second half which saw Jamal Blackman in early action when Ivan Toney got a pass to Marcus Forss with the Millers’ ‘keeper getting down well to get the ball away. An early yellow card went to Richard Wood for pulling Toney about with Matthew Olosunde doing well to see the ball out when Tarique Fosu tried to get the ball through to Rico Henry. Again Blackman had to be aware when he got up high to catch a ball that came in from Mathias Jensen. A shot from just outside the box from Jamie Lindsay was saved at the second attempt from David Raya before Wes Harding had to be alert to stop a cross from Jensen finding Marcus Forss. But on fifty-seven minutes Brentford’s pressure paid off after a cross from Bryan Mbeumo found Toney who keyed up Forrs to score from twelve yards out. A Joe Mattock corner at the other end found Michael Smith but he headed wide before some good work from Blackman stopped Forss nearly getting onto a ball in from Fosu. With twenty minutes to go the Millers made two changes fetching on  Florian Jozefzoon for Matt Olosunde and Joe Mattock making way for Mickel Miller. Miller’s first touch saw him yellow carded for a foul on Mbeumo which was followed a minute later by a booking for Angus MacDonald for fouling Toney.  Emiliano Marcondes replaced Josh Dasilva for the Bees with Paul Warne sending on George Hirst and Kyle Vassell for Freddie Ladapo and Jamie Lindsay. A minute later Brentford had a penalty for a foul by Miller in the area on Sergi Canos which saw the Rotherham substitute get a second yellow and an early bath and Toney scoring from the spot to make it two-nil to the visitors. A loose ball in the area from Vassell saw Raya get to it before Hirst. Two more changes for Brentford saw Aaron Pressley and Saman Ghoddos on for Ivan Toney and Marcus Forss. In time added on there were a couple of half-chances for the Millers but the game ended in a loss.

I thought we did really well in the first half and kept Toney quiet. Brentford changed the way they set up for the next forty-five minutes and we didn’t seem to be able to deal with that. We did have chances but couldn’t get the ball in the net.
