Rotherham United clinched promotion on Saturday by beating Gillingham at Priestfield two-nil.
But what do those stats say?
They first say that the Millers had fifty-two per cent of the possession winning sixty per cent of the aerial duels while having ten corners to the Gills four.
Our passing accuracy came out at sixty-four per cent and just a little less in our opponents half. I actually thought our passing was much improved from recent weeks on Saturday and we worked the wide pitch well.
Attack wise we had seventeen shots, fourteen of those inside the box, and seven on target. The hosts had two on target from seven shots.
Defensively Gillingham had a fifty per cent tackle rate and the Millers fifty-nine per cent. We conceded eleven fouls which was one more than our hosts and both teams had three players booked.
We went into this game knowing that only a win would do – yes, we could have got up if MK Dons had had a nightmare at Plymouth, and, let’s be honest, those Pilgrims are not to be taken lightly, but we couldn’t risk that. We started well, created, had the fans on their feet (even those who couldn’t make it to the ground), had the fans biting their fingernails and those of that persuasion praying – it was really the whole season pushed into ninety minutes. We didn’t look tired, we lost the ball and tried to win it back, we changed our corner routine more than once (I, for one, was impressed with that), we fought. And, we won. Next year we will again be a Championship team. At the start of the season we couldn’t have asked for more.
