Rotherham United were just two minutes away from doing the double over Sunderland this evening but it wasn’t to be as the hosts drew level with an own goal.
The Millers were well on top in the first half and defended stoutly – and had a little bit of luck – in the second but what do the stats say?
Sunderland had sixty-one per cent of possession and had the better percentage in the aerial duels – fifty-two per cent to forty-eight. I’m a bit surprised at both of those figures, yes, I’m biased, but I really thought we bossed the game in the first forty-five and would have had a lot more possession than the thirty-nine given.
Rotherham had ten corners to the hosts four while our passing accuracy in our opponents half was forty-nine per cent and our crossing accuracy twenty per cent, Sunderland’s being just two per cent more.
We had thirteen shots on goal of which just two were on target with ten of those shots being inside the box. The Black Cats had just five shots on goal of which none were on target. To be fair I don’t think either goalkeeper was tested much.
Our tackle success rate comes out at sixty-seven per cent to Sunderland’s fourteen while Rotherham conceded sixteen fouls and the hosts seven. Both sides were shown one yellow card.
So we are still in second spot. A win on Saturday could see us top the table if Wigan lose. A loss on Saturday, or a draw, and a win for MK Dons could see us drop down into the play-off places. We travel to Gillingham who will be looking for a win to stay up. MK Dons make the journey to Plymouth who will be looking for a win to stay in the play-offs.
It will be a very interesting lunchtime – there will be no fingernails left and someone is going to end up being extremely disappointed – let’s hope it’s not us Millers fans!
