Rotherham United took a further step towards promotion yesterday with a two-one win over Oxford United at the New York Stadium.
But what do those stats tell us?
The Millers have fifty-three per cent of possession and won sixty-six per cent of the duels in the air while also having six corners to Oxford’s three.
Our passing accuracy in our opponents half came out at fifty-five per cent with the U’s a few per cent less at forty-eight. Although we had twenty-two crosses our crossing accuracy was just twenty-seven per cent. Oxford got forty-three per cent accuracy from just seven crosses.
Attack wise Rotherham had sixteen shots at goal, twelve of those from inside the box, and six of them on target. The U’s had two shots on target from six. Tackling we got a seventy-three per cent success rate and our opponents fifty per cent.
Fouls conceded by the Millers was twelve, though again I ask what construed a foul, with Oxford conceding two more with five yellow cards being shown, three of them to the hosts.
It was a bit of a scrappy first half with Oxford taking an early lead meaning the Millers had an uphill battle. Going in front meant the visitors would want to slow things down and they did that by falling down at every opportunity, stopping to tie boots laces, pull up socks, moan at the referee, take their time over throw-ins and the ‘keeper seemingly needing to do all those and have a drink with any goal kick he had. Mr Breakspear did appear to speak to them about it half-an-hour in and then ignored it for the rest of the game, although he did tell us about it after our second goal went in. The goal in time added on in the first half gave us a big boost – fans, players and management – and the hosts were much the better side in the second half won and scored a penalty and looked like a team wanting to score more despite looking ‘dead on their feet’. All in all a good performance from the team in red and white and, actually, apart from being a Miller and never satisfied, I enjoyed the game.
Two left starting at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday.
Up The Millers.
