Rotherham United Chairman Tony Stewart says the first thing he will be looking for in a new manager is intelligence and communication skills after Paul Warne joined Derby County today.

Speaking to Paul Davis of the Rotherham Advertiser Mr Stewart also indicted he will be looking for a ‘young manager’ because ‘I don’t like old habits. Old habits can be bad habits.’

Warne was just forty-three when he became the Millers Manager in 2016 and, by the sounds of things, Mr Stewart is after someone in the same ilk. So who is out there who is young, keen, clever and used to talking? I’m sure there are a few people looking for the job who have one or two of those qualities but someone who has them all?

Maybe an ex-footballer who has done some TV or radio work? Would it matter if he’d been a manager/coach in the recent past? I wouldn’t think so if the Chairman is after ‘young blood’.

Mr Stewart also said, ‘We’ve lost a piece of the jigsaw but the picture is still there and we have to find a piece to put in place. We’ve got the squad, we’ve got the recruitment, we’ve got the backroom staff.’

Whoa. What backroom staff is that then? We’ve got Rob Scott who is Head of Recruitment (up to now we still have him anyway). We’ve got a Head of Medical, a Head Physiotherapist, a Senior Performance Coach and a Performance Analyst – but as the ‘main characters’ of the backroom staff have all gone with Paul Warne I’m not sure who the Chairman is on about.

He finished the interview with ‘ It’s working. Will it keep on working? Why not? We had three seasons in the Championship before Paul Warne.’

And we did didn’t we.
