Hull City 0 Rotherham United 0

Rotherham United hung on for a draw at a rainy MKM Stadium against Hull City after going down to ten men for the final ten minutes plus stoppage time.

It was the hosts who got to grips with the game first when an early free-kick saw Millers’ ‘keeper Viktor Johansson slide along the pitch to make sure of getting the ball and only just managed to keep it in his area. It was slow with just the odd free kick until around the tenth minute when Allahyar Sayyadmanesh got possession of the ball and was about to send it long for a loan City player when in stepped Lee Peltier to clear which was followed by Conor Coventry also having to hack away shot from Jacob Greaves. Johansson had to be on his mettle thump away a cross from Lewis Coyle before it found a City player. Rotherham’s first foray forward was led by Jamie Lindsay who found the ball at his feet in the box but trying to find a fellow Miller the ball was blocked and went out for a goal kick. Tariqe Fosu managed to keep hold of the ball despite a tackle coming in from behind but a City defender took it off him in his own penalty area and sent the ball forward before it found Regan Slater who put his shot wide of the upright. A superb cross from Shane Ferguson went just by Lindsay but almost landed at the feet of Jordan Hugill before the home defence dealt with it. The Millers got the first corner of the afternoon after some good work between Chieo Ogbene and Lindsay saw the ball fall to Coventry who won the corner which Hull defended well. Rotherham had two more quick corners the second aimed at Cameron Humphreys but City ‘keeper Karl Darlow get there first. More good work from the Rotherham number one saw him make himself big in a one-on-one situation with Ryan Longman and stops the visitors going one down. City’s first corner came just after the half-hour mark which ended going straight out for a goal-kick before a Millers’ corner saw Ferguson send a lovely ball into the area which found Peltier who sent his shot over the crossbar. The first yellow card of the afternoon went to Humphreys for a poor challenge on Adam Traore with the Greaves free-kick finding Allahyar who sent the ball wide. Both Hugill and Alfie Jones had to have treatment after a clash of heads and after the play re-started Longman found himself in front of goal with the ball but lost control and the move game to nothing. In four minutes added on at the end of the half Ogbene sent a lovely ball for Peltier but his cross only found Darlow before Cohen Bramall set Ferguson up for a shot but it went inches wide.

The Millers started the second half as they’d finished the first when a Tariqe Fosu cross looked to be heading for Jordan Hugill but the Hull defence cleared. The game was then a mass of free-kicks and a Hull corner which found the head of Alfie Jones who saw his header go wide. On fifty-three minutes the first change of the afternoon saw City fetch on Ozan Tufan for Ryan Longman. A header from Allahyar Sayyadmanesh found Tufan who put his shot past the upright before the second yellow of the game went to Lee Peltier on the hour mark after a foul on Allahyar. Tufan had looked lively since coming on and only a great block on the line from Shane Ferguson stopped him opening the scoring. Bailey Wright did well to stop Jacob Greaves getting a shot away before an injury to Peltier was treated on the pitch before he made way for Wes Harding and Domingos Quina came on for Shane Ferguson. A Rotherham corner found Fosu who won a free-kick which was taken by Quina who found Hugill his header going out for another corner. With fifteen minutes to go  Malcolm Ebiowei had a shot from outside the box which was blocked before corners for both sides came to nothing. Just ten minutes after coming off the substitutes bench Domingos Quina went in strong on Adam Traore and referee David Webb showed a red card and awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box which Ebiowei sent into the City fans behind the goal. A let off for the Millers. Jean Michael Seri sent a cross into the box for Sean McLoughlin but his header was high and wide. With five minutes of the ninety left another change for the visitors saw Jordan Hugill make way for Leo Hjelde and at the start of an extra six minutes Conor Washington replaced Chieo Ogbene and Hakeem Odoffin came on for Jamie Lindsay. Greaves got himself into space before finding Alfie Jones who blazed over before Washington flew down the other end and found himself with space for a shot which he put wide from a tight angle.

I don’t think you can every argue with a point away from home. It was very much back to the walls for the Millers when they went down to ten men but some solid defending stopped City getting a goal.

Attendance – 23,432 with 2,018 Millers filling the away end. It was announced at the game that this was the highest attendance at the MKM Stadium for six years

Referee – David Webb from Lancashire
