Smith ‘We Will Keep Fighting’

|

Rotherham United might be on the verge of leaving the Championship but like his Manager Paul Warne Millers striker Michael Smith isn’t going to go down without a fight.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post the twenty-seven year old said, ‘We will leave nothing in the tank. Until we know we are mathematically down, we will keep fighting.’

The Millers have two games which really they need maximum points from plus help from Stoke City, Bristol City and Wigan Athletic who play Millwall before the end of the season, who would then take the third relegation spot.

But, let’s be honest, that’s a big ask.

Smith also says that the Millers have shown what they can do this season and I’m sure there are some clubs and fans who have been a bit surprised about Rotherham who had to win at Wembley in the League One Play-Offs to get into the second tier of English football. A team that openly talk about the small squad they have, the small budget to work with.

There are games we should have won or, at least not lost. Recently at Swansea with a bit more luck we might have got a draw and with that same luck it could have been all three points at Stoke instead of one. But, in my opinion, in recent times it was the home loss to Aston Villa that had me shaking my head in disbelief. Down to ten men, scoring from the penalty spot we went in at half-time in front. Whatever was – or wasn’t – said in the Millers dressing room at half-time I don’t know but we came out like a different side, like we were suddenly frightened and we stood that far off Villa the players appeared to be stood about admiring them. Yes, I know what a good set of players Villa has but we let a home lead slip which should never have happened – and it wasn’t for the first time was it.

I’m pleased Michael Smith and the other lads are going to fight the good fight and I’m quite sure they will. It won’t be easy going to West Brom on Saturday, although, dare I hope that as they are sure of a play-off place they might lift their feet of the gas a little? Then we have Middlesbrough at the New York Stadium, who, at the time of writing, could still get a play-off spot – so another game that won’t be easy.

Then again, what game is easy in the Championship?

If you’re off to The Hawthorns on Saturday give the lads a bigger cheer than normal, applaud every good move, chant, scream, sing your hearts out – we need all the help we can get.
