Rotherham United defender Richard Wood told Radio Sheffield that he would like a new deal with the Millers.

Speaking to Jonathan Buchan the thirty-year old, who is out of contract in the summer said, ‘I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’ve been at the club two years and not played enough games. I’ve played in the last thirteen games and I’d like to think I’ve made an impression and done enough to earn a new contract.

‘There’s no question about it I would like to stay. This is a good club that’s going in the right direction. I’m from round here and I’m settle in the area and the last thing I want to be doing is travelling the length of the country just to get to training.’

Richard had a pretty torrid time when he first came to the New York Stadium playing a number of games, getting injured and being sent out on loan to Crawley where he stayed until April last year. Hoping for a new start this season September saw him out on loan again this time with Fleetwood before moving on to Chesterfield. Steve Evans left and Neil Redfearn didn’t seem interested in fetching him back so there he stayed until Neil Warnock arrived in February and, let’s be honest, he’s never really looked back.

‘When I first got into the team in February we were struggling. But Neil Warnock came in we’ve transformed the team and have done really well.

‘Neil is a very good man manager and he put the experienced players back in and the lads all know their jobs and we’ve done well. But that’s the sort of thing Neil Warnock is good at and it’s definitely helped.

‘That’s what Greg Halford and I needed. At times Greg wasn’t even training with the team and he’s had a great career.

‘I thought in January that I wouldn’t be involved at all and I’d have to move out and move on. But these last few months have changed my mind and I think I could do a job for Rotherham in the Championship.’

Asked if he thinks Warnock will still be with the Millers next season, Richard said, ‘I don’t know. He keeps contradicting himself so it’s anybodys guess. Personally I hope he stays. He has an affection with the club having been involved a while back and he’s loved his time here.’
