Rotherham United haven`t played many games this year – four to be exact. Two they`ve won and two they`ve lost. And the ones they`ve lost have been poor performances from the players.
And, during last nights loss to Bournemouth I got to thinking about the players who weren`t on the pitch or bench. Two came straight to mind and that was Stephen Brogan and Jamie Green.
Both players were born and brought up in Rotherham and, until recently, had been part of the Millers first team. So, I was wondering, where are they now? They`ve gone from being a part of the first team, to warming the bench to – well, nothing.
Paddy, as Brogan is affectionately known to Millers fans, was going great guns and was being talked about by teams in the Championship and Premiership, who were sending scouts to give him the once over, before he had a terrible accident two years ago this month. He had a collision with MK Dons ‘keeper, Willy Gueret, that resulted in a double fracture of his leg which didn`t heal as quickly as first hoped. But Paddy was determined and fourteen months after his accident, he made his comeback to a massive standing ovation when he came off the subs bench at Don Valley in the final game of last season. Paddy suffered a couple of setbacks with niggling injuries and this season came on, three times from the subs bench, before seemingly getting his place back in the first team.
Jamie will always have a place in the Millers history books after being the last Rotherham United player to score a goal at Millmoor. He was probably the best player of last season and earned the Vital Rotherham and MillersMad Mitch Cassell Trophy that we jointly give to the Young player we think has done well for the team. Jamie perhaps hadn`t been setting the team alight this season as he did last, but he had started in fifteen games before he was dropped to the bench in October for the game against Notts County. He played again in the Bradford win and in the loss against Darlington but in the last three games he hasn`t featured at all. None of the players actually endeared themselves during the Darlington game but was Jamie the one who deserved to be dropped?
I just hope these two home grown lads aren`t forgotten – because, in the past they`ve helped make Rotherham United into what they are.
Personally, I`d bring them both back for the game on Saturday at the Northern Echo Darlington Arena on Saturday. After all, they can`t be any worse than the eleven who were on the pitch last night, can they?
