Rotherham United’s Paul Warne says it’s been really hard to maintain fitness levels and enthusiasm while the weather has been like it has.

Speaking to MillersPlayer the thirty-six year old midfielder said, ‘You can`t really do that much outside because it`s rock hard, you can`t work in the gym all the time because you want football specific work. It`s not so much about fitness levels it`s more about match fitness.’

The team have been training on astro turf and Warney said, ‘Astro turf doesn`t suit all players. Some players have poor Achilles and bad knees. You can`t train on the astro turf for five days and then play a competitive match on grass it just isn`t feasible. We`re going to try and go on a 3G pitch this week to have a proper game and we can go to the pool and go on the bikes but the best possible training for a footballer is on a football pitch.

‘After the Bradford game you just wanted to carry on and have a few wins and it`s disappointing that we haven`t been able to do that. It wasn’t even as if the games were called off on Christmas Eve and the lads could have proper Christmas. The only good thing is that we`re still in third place

‘When we do play again, which should be this Saturday, though I very much doubt that, we need to hit the ground running and we are doing our best to make sure the lads are in the right physical state to do that.’
