Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne said that today’s game wasn’t one for the purists after he saw his side get a point away at Oldham.

‘It’s not the worst day I’ve had,’ Warney told iFOLLOW after the one-all draw this afternoon.

‘The pitch wasn’t really conducive for either team to play on but I thought we were in pretty good control of the game in the first half. We gave away a needless free-kick which they worked well and scored. At half-time we asked the lads to move the ball quicker. Oldham changed their system today and we couldn’t really get the ball into my strikers as much as we’d like. The pitch was flooded in the middle so the only way we could get through them was to go around them and we didn’t really have enough quality today but it was a difficult game.

‘I thought we fought and, at times, defended resolutely and I was comfortable that we weren’t going to concede. There were some good performances, although a few lads were a little under par for instance Richie Towell has been ill all week and is throwing up now in the dressing room

‘The lads are disappointed in the dressing room because they feel they’ve dropped two points which, from my point of view, is good because it means they are motivated enough to come and win.

‘We’re on a good little run, picked up a point away from home and gone seven without defeat. We’ll take that point today and we’ve now got two homes games to look forward to. If we keep picking up a point away from home it will be a good club to be at.’

Yes, I agree, the pitch didn’t help but ‘we defended resolutely’? Not sure about that – we defended and were lucky I would think. But, to be a bit more positive we got a point away from home – what we would have given for that this time last year.
