Rotherham United’s caretaker Manager Paul Warne said that the players were desperate to win for him this afternoon away at Burton Albion.

Speaking to MillersPlayer after the two-one defeat, Warney said, ‘I’m hugely disappointed.

‘I’ve built it up all week to be a bit of a Cup Final and I honestly believed that it was fate that I’d take the team once in my life and honestly believed if there was a soccer god it would give me a win. I am a bit of a fatalist and I honestly believed we’d win today.

‘I tried to put that into the lads all week and they were desperate to win for themselves and for me. When I walked off the pitch I had players come up to me and apologise and visibly look devastated. But no-one is more devastated than me because I’d loved to have win for the fans who came.

‘I knew how we were going to set up. We were trying to get Izzy Brown in between the lines and he was then going to turn and get that back three. I quite like the way Burton play and if it was my team and my pre-season I’d set up in a similar sort of vein as their three-five-two because I think it works really well.

‘I thought we started the game really well and I don’t think, to be fair, they had more chances in the game than us. The sad reality is we didn’t take ours.

‘I changed the system in the second half and we went four-three-three and I thought we’d have a go. In fairness the lads did keep going to the end and they got a goal so I’ll take the positives from that and, if it’s still me in charge, will try and build them up for next week.’

Asked about bringing in some help on the coaching side, Warney said, ‘that’s coming along fine but I still don’t want to tell you who it is. I’ll speak to the Chairman and see where he’s at but my opinion hasn’t changed. Three days ago I said I didn’t want to do the job full-time and after the defeat today I haven’t flipped and thought ‘you know what this is easier than I thought’.
