Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne was pleased with Michael Ihiekwe‘s performance when he came off the subs bench just shy of the forty minute mark on Tuesday night against Oxford.

The twenty-five year old hasn’t started a game since the beginning of December and has had to be content with a place on the bench.

‘Apart from the odd cameo appearance Michael hasn’t really kicked a ball in anger since the Blackpool game,’ Warney told iFOLLOW.

‘He’s been training really well but Woody (Richard Wood)and Semi (Ajayi) have been doing great and he’s just got to be patient.

‘I had no big issues with him coming on at left-back (for the injured Joe Mattock)because he can play their comfortably. He’s good in the air and he’s pretty mobile so for him to play at left-back isn’t too much of a stretch.

‘It’s difficult coming on as a sub in the first half because I don’t think you are really mentally ready but the more the game went on the more I think he got into it. And he was probably playing against their most dynamic player.

‘He did really well and I’m pleased for him.’

If Joe Mattock doesn’t make the team tomorrow at Shrewsbury will Michael start at left-back? Will he be pushed up to his more familiar central-defence position and Semi Ajayi move over to left-back? Or will we see Ben Purrington out there?
