Rotherham United were without a game this weekend as their opponents, Reading, were at Wembley taking on the might of Arsenal in an FA Cup semi-final – and taking them on rather well.

But is it right that our National Stadium is used for semi-final games? Wouldn’t it be ‘special` if it was just used for Finals of our Cup Competitions?

The first time we saw Wembley being used for a semi-final game was in 1991 when Arsenal took on Tottenham and in 1993 both semi-finals were played there. In 2000, the last year of the ‘Old` Wembley both semis were played there again and once the ‘New` Wembley opened, in 2008, all the semi-finals of the FA Cup have taken place there.

Well, that`s all well and good for the clubs who live not too far away but for the likes of the clubs in the North East, the Yorkshire, Lancashire and Midlands clubs it`s a long way to travel when you might be travelling there again six weeks later for the final.

We all know that the reason for the change to Wembley is for financial reasons – although they haven`t thought of the fans finance in all of this. And, of course, it`s brilliant to see your side at Wembley.

I’ve been lucky and have been three times with the Millers (Auto Windscreen Final and two Play-Off Finals) but they were Finals. But, to me, it is an awful lot of expense when you’ve travelled up and down the country all season to play in a semi-final when there are grounds nearer to play on. For instance, Aston Villa v Liverpool – couldn`t they have played at Old Trafford or The Emirates? OK, I can understand Reading and Arsenal playing at Wembley as it`s within easy distance of both clubs.

And, as I said earlier, two of those clubs will be travelling to Wembley again shortly – and it could be that fans have to chose whether to attend the semi-final or the final if they can`t afford both – leaving Wembley with empty seats for one of the ties.

It used to be such a buzz watching or attending the Cup Final at Wembley – and I think it`s a shame that now it`s just another day.

Wembley should be special – so let`s make it just for Finals.

What do you think?
