Rotherham United could need bigger benches next season at the New York Stadium as Football League clubs have voted in favour of returning to seven substitutes.

In an attempt to cut costs, the Football League reduced the number of subs to five last season but the move proved very unpopular with managers and, at the Football League’s Annual General Meeting, a proposal from Derby County and Birmingham to re-introduce the seven subs rule was backed by Chairman of other League clubs.

I think this is good news for the youth players in the squad who will get a chance to make up the numbers on the bench – I’d actually have liked to see a rule which said, two of the seven have to be under eighteen.
