With Rotherham United putting out the shirt numbers yesterday for the new season – and with it looking quite impressive having a number 40 in the ranks – we have to realise that there are a lot of numbers not being used in the middle!

With a week to go to kick-off the Millers have a squad of twenty players – two of which are goalkeepers, two who are injured – one probably for the whole of next season – and two players who have come through the Youth ranks, one of who has played five minutes for the Millers and one who hasn’t played at all (though I’m really hoping these two lads get a good go next season).

So rumours are bound to be increasing this week and one is that former Liverpool defender Ryan McLaughlin is training with Rotherham.

Coming through the Youth ranks at Anfield, Ryan never actually made a first team appearance for the Reds. He had loan spells with Barnsley and Aberdeen who he played a handful of games for last season before being released by Liverpool in June.

But is it a defender we should be looking for?

What we should, in my humble opinion, be on the look out for is a striker and with new Manchester United Boss Jose Mourinho wielding the axe at Old Trafford it could be that twenty-three year old forward Will Keane could get the chop.

The England U21 striker could be surplus to requirement and the Millers could be one club interested in him.

Will has played a handful of games for Manchester United, two after being recalled from his loan spell with Preston North End last season.

Yesterday Millers Assistant Manager John Doolan echoed his Manager Alan Stubbs by saying that they were working very hard behind the scenes to bring players in.

Perhaps these two are on the radar.
