Rotherham United Player Development Manager, Darren Sarll was disappointed with the Reserve loss on Monday afternoon at Roundwood.

Speaking to MillersPlayer after their first game of the season on Monday afternoon against Bradford City, Sarll said he was disappointed with the result.

‘It`s got to be better than that for the young ones who are coming up trying to get a career.

‘We are trying to develop a philosophy where the club can develop from the younger groups all the way up to the first team. And it is difficult but we`ll stick by it.

‘Some people have got to understand why they are in the Reserves. If you are a kid then it`s a reward for doing well and as a pro it`s to replicate and practice what you need to do to be in the first team.`

Chris Holroyd scored the goal for the Millers in the two-one loss and Sarll said, ‘Chris needs some time at this sort of standard and he`s got to try and embrace the things that the manager wants him to do on a Saturday for the first team and this was a good opportunity for him to practice and it was a good finish for his goal.`

Asked about the three trialists in the side, Sarll said, ‘James Grey was formally with Middlesbrough which is a very well thought of and renown academy. Nathan Fox was at Notts County last year and Kyle Vassell was at Brentford.`

Sarll went on to talk about Alec Denton who scored a hat-trick for the youth squad on Saturday and played in the reserves on Monday. He was also included in the pre-season trip to Portugal.

‘He`s done well of late. We`ve asked him to be in critical areas for longer parts of the game rather than running out wide and he`s taken that on board. He`s playing with a more thought and a better intensity and hopefully he keeps going and if he does then he`ll be forcing his way in.`
