Rotherham United Supporters Club have a new member in tow – nothing unusual there you might think, but this member’s application has taken fifty-seven years to be approved!

Winifred Kirkland was just twenty-one years old when she applied to be a member of the Supporters Club but she had her application turned down because the club, at that time, had six thousand (yes, thousand!) members.

Mrs Kirkland, a season ticket holder in the Millmoor Lane Stand, found the rejection letter while she was having a clear out and told her son about it, who is a member of the London Supporters Branch. He brought the story to the attention of the Supporters Club and they have now made Mrs Kirkland an honorary member.

Anne Jardine, the Supporters Club membership secretary, told The Advertiser, ‘The story struck a chord when we heard about it and making her an honorary member is the least we could do.’

Mrs Kirkland said, ‘It’s a nice gesture and totally unexpected and I have fulfilled a lifetime ambition.’

The Supporters Club doesn’t have quite as many members as it did in 1951 and I am certain they wouldn’t turn away any applications these days but they do have members of all ages – from new born babies to eighty four year olds!

There are still spaces on the coaches for tomorrows trip to Wycombe. For more details phone 07702 664831
