Rotherham United midfielder Richie Smallwood deservedly won the club`s Player of the Year and was given his award at the end of season dinner at the weekend.

Richie was with the Millers last season helping them to promotion and scoring one of the penalties at Wembley before he returned to his parent club Middlesbrough. After having bids turned down for the twenty-four year old during the summer he finally signed for Rotherham just after the start of the season and has played in forty games since.

Speaking to MillersPlayer Richie said, ‘I`m honoured to get this award and can`t thank everyone enough who voted.

‘Hopefully I can first get the club safe and then build on this award and get ready for next season in the Championship.

‘I’ve loved every minute playing here and I hope I’ve repaid the Manager for buying me from Middlesbrough with my performances over the season. I know I’ve got a long way to go and I`m no where near the finished article so I`ll just keep playing and improving with every game.

‘There have been a few highlights for me this season but I`m sure there is more to come.`

Saying it was absolutely deserved Rotherham Manager Steve Evans said, ‘We worked so hard last summer to agree a transfer fee with Middlesbrough and he`s been fantastic for us. He`s a model professional and I don`t think there`s a player in the Millers camp who deserves it more than he does.`
