The man in charge of our first play-off leg on Saturday will be …
Iain Williamson from Berkshire
Iain progressed through the Ryman League and was promoted to the National List of Referees in 2002 and in the same year he was an assistant referee in the LDV Trophy area final. Two years later he was fourth official in the divisional play-offs.
The last time Iain was in charge of a Millers game was at Southend in February 2012. A nine minute goal from Shaun Harrad and a goal seven minutes from time from Alex Revell gave the Millers a two-nil victory at Roots Hall.
The season before that Iain was in the middle for our game at Whadden Road against Cheltenham. Jason Taylor put the Millers in front on eleven minutes. Unfortunately for the Millers Andy Gallinagh equalised for Cheltenham just after the hour mark. That day Iain booked Tom Newey, Nick Fenton and Jason Taylor of the Millers. After the game there were a few disgruntled Millers having a moan about Mr Williamson and his officials after they missed a clear handball in the penalty area plus other incidents.
In December 2007 Iain was in charge for our game at Millmoor when Rochdale were the visitors. Gary Jones and a certain Adam Le Fondre put the visitors two-up in the opening seven minutes but goals from Ian Sharps and Derek Holmes saw the hosts level the game before seventeen minutes had gone on the clock. Three minutes into the second half Glenn Murray put the visitors back in front and a goal on the stroke of full-time from Lee McEvilly made it four-two to the visitors.
Later in that same season he was also in charge of our game away at Mansfield in which a freak/fluke goal by Jamie Yates won the game for the Millers. Yates, who came on ten minutes into the second half, launched the ball from forty yards out and, with goalkeeper Jason White, expecting it to go over the bar (and us behind the net waiting to catch it!), the ball flew into the back of the net just under the crossbar. It was difficult to know who was the more surprised – the goalie, who realised too late what was going to happen, the Millers fans or Yates himself!
In the 2006/7 season Mr Williamson was twice in the middle for Rotherham games – the first being at Dean Court when Eugen Bopp opened the scoring for the visitors but Josh Gowling equalised for Bournemouth. Two minutes later Will Hoskins put the Millers back in the lead with Lee Williamson making it three-one before the break. The only thing of note in the second half was a red card Mr Williamson gave to Eugen Bopp eight minutes from time. Later in the season a goal from Marcus Stewart on the stroke of half-time gave Yeovil a one-nil win over Rotherham at Huish Park.
The first time we saw Iain in the middle for a Rotherham game was in March 2004 at the Priestfield Stadium. Two first-half goals from Barry Ashby and Mamady Sidbie gave the Gills all three points.
This season Iain has been in charge of twenty-six games and has shown seventy-four yellow cards and one red card which was to Chesterfield’s Eoin Doyle.
