Rotherham United make their first ever trip to the Highbury Stadium to take on Fleetwood Town this evening.

The original Fleetwood FC was formed in 1908 and were champions of the Lancashire Combination League n 1923-24.

After almost sixty years as a Lancashire Combination club in 1968 they were founder members of the Northern Premier League but folded eight years later because of financial problems.

In 1977 the club re-established themselves as Fleetwood Town FC and were placed in Division one of the Cheshire League but were moved five years later to the North West Counties League Division Two and promoted to Division One in 1984.

In 1985 they played at Wembley losing three-one to Halesowen Town in the FA Vase Final. Unfortunately, the club folded again in 1996.

A year later the club re-formed for the third time as Fleetwood Wanderers finding themselves back in Division One of the North West Counties Football League. A sponsor deal saw them change names again to Fleetwood Freeport FC and were promoted to the Premiership Division of the North West Counties League and in 2002 re-named Fleetwood Town FC.

In 2007/8 season the Cod Army won the Northern Premier League and were promoted to the Conference North.

In 2009/10 Fleetwood won promotion to the Football Conference via the play-offs and the following season made all their playing staff full-time professionals and once again reached the play-offs but this time lost to AFC Wimbledon in the semi-finals.

In the 2011/12 season, with two games still to go, Fleetwood Town were declared Champions of the league and given promotion to the Football League for the first time.

This season the Cod Army have reached fourth place as we go into tonight`s game and after drawing one, losing one and winning one in August they had three straight wins in September and gained nine points last month and, like the Millers progressed into the second round of the FA Cup at the weekend.
