Rotherham United’s new boy, Tom Pope, says he wasn’t looking to leave Crewe but he was frustrated there.

Speaking to The Sentinel Crewe’s top scorer last season said, ‘When I was at Crewe I’d have two or three good games, one bad one and wouldn’t play for four games, yet other players were keeping their shirts.

‘No one at Crewe ever told me I was doing a good job though they told me the things I was doing wrong. I never got any encouragement or got the chance to build up my confidence. Towards the end it started to get me down and I felt frustrated – but I suppose that’s football.

‘Crewe gave me my first chance and Steve Holland, Dario Gradi, Gudjon Thordarson and Neil Baker have got me to where I am. It’s a shame I have to leave but I feel I’ve got a new challenge with Rotherham. With the fee they paid there comes pressure and hopefully the fans won’t expect too much to start with. Hopefully I can get a few goals and shut the people up who said I’m not good enough.’
