Rotherham United’s Don Vally pitch has fallen just below average in a review, but Chief Operating Officer, Paul Douglas, says that the club are quite encouraged by this.

Speaking to The Advertiser, Mr Douglas explained, ‘There is a twice yearly review of the pitch in which marks are given by referees and opposing managers. We have just had the latest one and we came just below the divisional average, but, considering the short time we have been at Don Valley we are quite encouraged by that.

‘We don’t feel encumbered in any way by our arrangement there – yes, we share with a rugby team but rugby league is a running game and doesn’t hammer the pitch like union.

‘We do recognise that we need to do more to get the playing surface we want which is one of the reasons we feel it necessary to have our own groundsman to maintain the quality of care it needs.’
