Born in Huddersfield Joe came through the Youth ranks of his home town club and went on to make around seventy appearances for the Terriers. While with the West Yorkshire outfit he was named the Football League Apprentice for League One in 2007 and had loan spells with Hartlepool and Shrewsbury.

At the end of the 2009/10 season Huddersfield put Joe on the transfer list and moved to Bury that summer where he played over one hundred and thirty games. In March 2013 the Millers signed Joe on loan until the end of the season when he became Steve Evans’ first permanent signing of the season.
Joe has made fifty appearances for the Millers this season scoring two goals on the way – the first on New Years Day in the three–one loss to Coventry and his second in the ten goal thriller at Molineux on Good Friday. Joe played seventy-seven minutes of the Play-Off Final at Wembley going off with a cut to his face.
