What was happening to the Millers on 20th April in days gone by ….

20 April 2013

On this day two years ago we made the long journey down to Home Park to take on Plymouth Argyle. It wasn’t the best game in the sunshine we had seen all season but it was fruitful when a deep free-kick from Joe Skarz found Johnny Mullin who in turn headed down to Kieran Agard in the six yard area who hit the ball into the back of the net for the only goal of the afternoon.

20 April 2012

This day in 2012 the Millers were looking forward to moving into their new stadium with Steve Evans saying he wanted the fans to fill the stadium.

Looking towards the next season the Millers had very few players on their books with the Gaffer knowing he had to address that situation. He said he knew they’d had a lot of loan players that season but he didn’t want that again saying, ‘As a manager in an ideal world you don’t want loan players. Loan players are an excuse for a manager who has to fill a void by injuries or suspensions or maybe a short fall in the squad.’

Meanwhile defender Tom Newey said that it had been a tough season for him as he hadn’t stated a game since December saying that ‘Andy Scott obviously didn’t like me’. He did say that he felt it had got better since Steve Evans took over.

20 April 2011

On this day we found out that former Miller Peter Perry had sadly died. Peter was in the side that played in the first ever League Cup Final against Aston Villa and played over one hundred league and cup games for the Millers before moving to York City in 1962.

Recently appointed Manager Andy Scott had left top scorer Adam Le Fondre on the bench for the previous game against Hereford saying it was a difficult decision but ‘that’s my job and what I’m paid for. It’s up to me to maximise what he can do and I believe I can make him better than he already is.’ The game with the Bulls ended goalless.

20 April 2010

Five years ago today the Millers released five youngsters while left back, Luke Beastall, striker, Alec Denton and right back, Liam Royles, were offered new deals.

Ronnie Moore was looking towards the play-offs saying it was in the Millers own hands and they needed to get points from their last three games.

20 April 2008

The Millers were awaiting their fate on their administration problems on this day in 2008. Goalkeeper Andy Warrington said he was staying confident sure that there were people out there who would want to invest in Rotherham United. Andy was one of the playing staff who agreed to defer his wages to help the club through the current crisis with Woggy saying, ‘we are playing for pride.’

20 April 2007

This time eight years ago then Chairman Denis Coleman was tallying the cost of relegation saying it would cost the club around £500,000 due to funding from the Football League dropping, lower attendances and less season tickets being sold.

Mr Coleman also stated that ‘Millmoor is a disgrace. We have a big job on our hands.’

Manager Mark Robins knew that he had a big rebuilding job to do with seven first team players out of contract, which included both goalkeepers.

20 April 1999

On this day sixteen years ago the Millers made the trip to Shrewsbury on, what if memory serves, was a very wet Tuesday night. Leo Fortune-West opened the scoring for the Millers on eight minutes but Lee Steele equalised five minutes later. The visitors regained the lead on the sixty-seven minute with a goal from Paul Warne only for Stephen Jagielka to get a second equaliser for the Shrews. Four minutes from the end the Millers went in front for the third time when Phil Whelan put the ball in the back of the net giving Rotherham a three-two win at Gay Meadow.

20 April 1996

A goal from Shaun Goodwin followed by a penalty by Nigel Jemson gave the Millers a two-nil win away at Crewe on this day in 1996.

20 April 1992

Blackpool were the visitors to Millmoor on this Easter Monday when goals from Tony Cunningham and Des Hazel gave the Millers a two-nil victory.
