Rotherham United defender, Johnny Mullins must have been not only delighted to get his first goal of the season on Saturday but also to get the one that gave the Millers all three points over Hereford.

Speaking after the game to MillersPlayer the former Reading and Stockport County player said, ‘I’d have preferred to be the match winner with a clean sheet. I’m paid as a defender to keep a clean sheet but I’m not going to moan and I’ll take the two goals and be pleased to get three points and to push on now.

‘I thought the first goal I just concentrated on kicking it and not missing it and the second one I’ve just seen the ‘keeper and I’ve slotted it in the corner.

‘I thought at two-nil we were really comfortable and we’d spoken about being solid and getting to half-time with a clean sheet but we had two lapses of concentration and they’ve got two goals back. In the second half they chucked everything and the kitchen sink at us but we got the goal and hung on. On another day we could probably have won that three- or four-nil if we’d done the right things.

‘As a team we do score goals but we’ve got to shore up at the other end and keep clean sheets and then we’ll fly up this league. It’s easy saying it but we’ve really got to go and do it.

‘The most important thing is the points because this is a difficult place to come but after the first half, I thought defensively, we were very good in the second half.’

Asked if, with all the changes in the defence, he thinks he’s done enough to keep his place, the twenty-six year old said, ‘I hope so. I came back from injury and I had a little rest a couple of weeks ago because I was looking jaded but I’ve got in and I just want to play. A settled back four would, in my opinion, breed success but we can’t do much when we’ve got injuries and suspensions. But, once we do get that settled back four I think we might see an improvement.’

With a big grin on his face, Johnny said, ‘It was my daughter’s birthday yesterday, she’s only three, and probably won’t understand but I won’t stop telling her about my goals!’
