RUFC – Millers Boss ‘Proud’ Of His Lads

|

Rotherham United Manager Paul Warne told Radio Sheffield that he is ‘proud’ of his lads after today’s goalless draw at Wigan.

‘I thought we could have been two up in the first five or six minutes,’ Warney said after getting a point to cement a place nearer the play-offs, ‘and we’d asked the lads to come and play brave when we were in possession and to frustrate them when we didn’t have the ball.

‘Wigan were excellent at the start of the second half but I thought we defended pretty well and rode the storm. For the last twenty minutes, the way I see it, we were by far the better team.

‘I thought it was a penalty from where I stood. The ball definitely hit his arm but the ref said it was ball to arm whatever that chestnut is. And it’s not that we were playing defensive, we were getting players up with Smudge (Michael Smith) all the time.

‘I’ve got to give credit to all my back room staff and I think we got the tactics spot on today and, on another day we might have nicked a goal.

‘I’m really proud of the lads who I asked to play brave against a very good team and they did, so it’s another good day at the office. Rotherham or Wigan fans can’t complain that a point was shared today.

‘I thought we had a really good following today and the Rotherham fans were singing the whole time. They were excellent.’

The Millers Boss said that there were some really good performances this afternoon, saying, ‘Ike (Michael Ihiekwe) came back today at centre-half and had a really good performance. Woody (Richard Wood) has half a lip hanging off in the changing room but he’s a complete warrior and he’ll get over it. Tayls (Jon Taylor) and Willo (Ryan Williams) gave us real energy and pace. I thought Michael Smith worked really hard today and he deserved a goal for his performance because he was a constant threat and didn’t let their centre-half rest.’

Going on to talk about Joe Newell, who wasn’t in the match day squad today, Warney said, ‘He wasn’t fit. He trained on Monday and had a bit of a sore quad then didn’t train all week and I was told he was available for the squad today yesterday but he hadn’t trained so, in my head, he’s not available. He’ll be available for Tuesday night but he’ll have to fight to get back in.

‘Richie Towell was doing a good job today but his back tightened a bit so I brought him off and put Forde on.’
