Rotherham United have brought in Steve Evans as their new Manager and he will take charge of his first game on Saturday when the Millers travel to Shrewsbury.

I think to say most people were shocked by the appointment is a fair statement.

We were led to believe that former Premiership/Championship managers had applied for the job as well as former managers from local teams. So when the job is given to someone who has had less than a year in League football, I think we were allowed to be walking round looking a bit bemused and wondering.

Then we are told that the Chairman has given the new man a three-year contract – again questions were asked.

At the moment the negativity coming from Millers supporters is there for all to see. We were so ‘up` over the new ground; so ‘expectant` of a ‘big name` becoming our new manager. And to say we feel a bit let down, I think, is an understatement. I spoke to one of the players after the appointment and he was truly amazed when I said that Steve Evans wasn`t the fans first choice (second or third or ?..)

We know we have to put our faith in the Chairman – but this is the third time in as many years and once again, he seems to have divided the fans – fans, that in my opinion, he can ill-afford to divide.

But, is it all bad?

Let`s go to the positives of this appointment. Steve Evans had all but got Crawley up into League One before he left, and, on his own admission, didn`t want to leave until he`d, hopefully, done that. Yet, he`s come here with his former club on the brink of play-offs/automatic promotion which must mean something.

He`s a character, there`s no denying that, and I think he will get Rotherham United noticed – though whether that be good or bad time will only tell.

So, maybe a lot of us aren`t happy with the appointment, didn`t want Evans here, are disappointed. Many probably won`t, in their hearts, be able to get behind him – I`ve already had someone tell me he won`t be able to sing ‘Steve Evans red n white army`. Fair enough – but let us all Unite and get behind the team.

I sat at Don Valley on Monday and all I heard from behind me was ‘he`s rubbish, gerrim off`, ‘he can`t pass for toffee`, ‘he shouldn`t be in the side`, ‘he can`t run`. (No wonder the other local teams` fans call us ‘moaning Millers`). Let`s not do this anymore. Let`s encourage from the sidelines. When a player makes a mistake, let`s sing louder to cover it up. Let`s applaud every players name when it`s read out.

Let us, the fans, become that twelfth man. Let`s be positive.
