Millers v Wolves in the Carling Cup Second Round….
Rotherham United take on Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Second Round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night at Don Valley. As we know, the Millers have already beaten a Championship Club, Sheffield Wednesday to get through to this round while Wolves had a bit of a torrid game against Accrington Stanley, taking until extra time to beat them 3-1.
The last time the Millers and Wolves met was in the Championship in 2004/05 season, Wolves winning both games. In the game at Millmoor Martin McIntosh put the Millers ahead in the first half but two goals in ten minutes of the second half, scored by Kevin Cooper and Carl Cort, gave the visitors victory. At Molineux the home side were 2-0 victors, both goals coming from Kenny Miller.
But I think the game most Millers will remember was in the League Cup in 2002 when the game ended 4-4 after extra time! A 5th minute goal from Andy Monkhouse put the Millers in front but a penalty on the 45th minutes from Shaun Newton made it one all at half time. Wolves then went 3-1 in front with goals from Kenny Miller and Alex Rae before Mark Robins converted a penalty and Chris Swailes levelled the score four minutes before full time. Extra time was just three minutes old when Richie Barker put the Millers in the lead and they looked like they were going to hang on until the last minute when Rob Scott scored the most bizarre own goal passed a bemused Mike Pollitt in front of the Tivoli! Luckily, the Millers nerves held out and they won 4-2 on penalties.
