A few facts and figures of previous games between the Millers and the Owls

Rotherham United make the short journey to Hillsborough this weekend to take on Sheffield Wednesday with will be the thirty-fifth league meeting between the teams.

Last season Matt Derbyshire scored the only goal of the game at Hillsborough on the twenty-first minute to give the Millers all three much needed points. The season before was a goalless draw.

Before the two met in the Championship in the last couple of years the last time they met in the league was in League One in August 2002. The hosts went in front with a goal from Craig Armstrong on just eight minutes. Just before the half-hour mark a poor tackle saw Paul Warne bungled over in the penalty area with Alan Lee stepping up and sending Kevin Pressman the wrong way which levelled the scores up. Pressman made amends by making some superb saves in the second half but in the final minute of the game a fantastic strike from Darren Garner, who had replaced Stewart Talbot just over twenty minutes earlier, literally flew into the net to send the travelling Millers fans wild.

Teams That Day

Beswetherick (McLaren)

Subs not used – Evans, Soltvedt, Donnelly, Crane

Talbot (Garner)
Sedgwick (Monkhouse)
Lee (Barker)

Subs not used – Gray, Beech

The season before this, strangely enough, the score was the same – a two-one win for the Millers at Hillsborough. This time an Alan Lee goal opened the scoring on fifty minutes with Shefki Kuqi climbing highest to equalise twenty minutes later. With it look like it was going to be a point a piece up a free-kick in the final minute of the game was met by Richie Barker, who had come on for Mark Robins on the sixty-eighth minute, and he headed the ball past Kevin Pressman into the net for the winning goal.

The last time the Millers lost at Hillsborough was in the Old Division Two on a Tuesday night in September 1981 when the Owls went away with a two-nil win.

The first time that Rotherham beat Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough was in September 1951 when there were eight goals in the game. The score was five-three to the visitors with Jack Shaw getting two goals and Jack Grainger, Charlie Tomlinson and Peter Wragg, with his first ever league goal, scoring too.

The two first met at Hillsborough in March 1921 when it was a two-nil win for the Owls.
