A few facts about Millers v Iron games

Rotherham United, newly back from their trip to Portugal, entertain Scunthorpe United at Don Valley this evening in the next pre-season game.

The last time the two sides met was in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area final in the 2008/9 season. The game was over two legs, the first being at Glanford Park when two goals in the space of six minutes gave the Iron the advantage going into the second leg. Martyn Woolford and Krystian Pearce scored the goals. The only goal of the return game at Don Valley was scored on seventy-four minutes by Gary Hooper to give Scunthorpe a three-nil aggregate score.

The last time the Millers beat the Iron was in August 2006 at Millmoor. Billy Sharp put the visitors in the lead on six minutes but Eugen Bopp levelled just a minute later with a great shot from twenty-five yards out. After that it was all the home side and the pressure paid off just before half-time when Pablo Mills got to a Will Hoskins free kick to head the ball in the net. Despite efforts from both sides, there were no more goals in the second half and the Millers got their first home win of the season.

In October 1998 the game between the two sides at Glanford Park produced seven goals. The Iron were four up (Russ Wilcox, John Eyre (pen), Alan Knill (og) and Richard Logan) just before the hour mark and many Millers fans, fearing the worst, started to leave the ground. Then, on seventy-two minutes the visitors seem to wake up and Darren Garner pulled one back. Paul Hurst pulled another one back fifteen minutes later and in the last minute Garner scored again to make it interesting in time added on. But the Millers couldn’t get another to get a point.
