Rotherham United take on Shrewsbury Town at Wembley on Sunday in the League One Play-Off Final which is the sixty-third time the pair have met in all competitions.
This season the teams took three points each from the two league games, both at one another’s home. In November the Shrews came to the New York Stadium winning two-nil. The game was sixteen minutes old when Jon Nolan put the visitors in front, the Shrews ‘keeper Dean Henderson having already saved a penalty from Kieffer Moore. Eight minutes into the second half a poor challenge on Shaun Cummings from Abu Ogogo saw Town go down to ten when Ogogo was sent-off. On seventy-six minutes a loose ball fell to Richie Towell who said ‘thank you very much’ and made it one-one but three minutes into time added on at the end of the game Stefan Payne scored from close range to give the visitors all three points. At the end of the game Shrewsbury were top of the league with Rotherham dropping to eighth.
The game at the New Meadow was in February when just before half-time up popped skipper Richard Wood to score the only goal of the game with the Millers leaving with the points. The table saw that the Shrews were still top at this point with the Millers fourth.
The end of the season saw Shrewsbury end in third place with eighty-seven points and Rotherham a place below them on seventy-nine points.
Rotherham went on to play Scunthorpe in the play-off semi-finals winning four-two on aggregate, having drawn at Glanford Park and won two-nil at the New York Stadium. Shrewsbury took on Charlton, winning both games one-nil.
Of course, we all know that the clubs have met at Wembley before in April 1996 in the Auto Windscreen Trophy Final. Two goals from Nigel Jemson, one in each half gave Rotherham a two goal lead with a Mark Taylor goal nine minutes from time making it an uncomfortable last ten minutes for the Millers and their fans.
