Shrewsbury come to Don Valley on Monday night and here is a bit of history between them and the Millers
Rotherham United and Shrewsbury Town have met each other fifty-three times in all competitions over the years but the game fixed in all Millers fans minds will be the one that took place on Sunday, 14th April 1996. This was the day that Millers fans went in their thousands to the capital and came back with the Auto Windscreen Trophy.
The Millers and Shrews have been playing each other since the 1950’s when they were both in the English Division Three North league and, in the past, there have been a couple of four-nil’s – one for each side.
The Shrews came to Millmoor in August 1994 and goals from Wayne Clarke, Robert Taylor and Dean Spink (2)gave the visitors the win while five years later, the score, again at Millmoor, was reversed. The Millers had the game under control as early as the third minute when they were two goals up! Andy Turner and Rob Scott scored those early goals and two goals from Darren Garner made it four-nil just after the half-hour mark.
The game earlier this season saw goals from Waide Fairhurst and Jamie Devitt give all three points to the Shrews at the New Meadow.
