A few facts and figures of previous meetings between the Millers and the U’s
Rotherham United travel to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday (weather permitting) to take on an Oxford side who haven’t lost at home since the first week in November in the League.
This will be the twenty-fourth game between the Millers and the U’s, the third time the two have met at the Kassam Stadium, which saw it’s first football game in August 2001.
The first time the two met at the Kassam was in February 2011 which ended in a two-one win for the home side, Simon Heslop opening the scoring for the U’s on eighteen minutes with Nicky Law equalising for the Millers eighteen minutes later. Just after the hour mark disaster struck for the visitors when Steve MacLean went by Callum Kennedy in the box and the youngster, who was on loan from Swindon Town, tugged the sleeve of MacLean and he went down. Referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot and showed a red card to Kennedy. MacLean scored the winner from the penalty spot.
It was the same result last season with Scott Rendell and Asa Hall scored either side of half-time with a consolation goal for the Millers scored seven minutes from the end of the game after Jason Taylor was hacked down in the penalty area and Lewis Grabban scored the spot-kick.
The last time the Millers won at game at Oxford was in August 1977 in the old Division Three league. The game ended three-two to the Millers with Jimmy Goodfellow, Trevor Phillips and Tommy Spencer getting the Millers goals.
One of the most exciting games between the U’s and the Millers was at the Manor Ground in March 2001. Rob Quinn scored on six minutes for the home side with Mark Robins making it one-all eighteen minutes later. Three minutes later Manny Omoyinmi put the U’s back in the lead and fifteen minutes into the second half Omoyinmi made it three-one. Guy Branston made it three-two just after the hour mark but a certain Andy Scott gave the home side the two-goal advantage again. Alan Lee made the last ten minutes interesting by making it three-two but the U’s held on and got the win.
Earlier this season the game at the New York Stadium started badly for the Millers when Sean Rigg opened the scoring on eight minutes for the visitors. But a penalty on the half-hour mark from Michael O’Connor and then another from him and one from Jason Taylor in the second half gave the Millers all three points.
